A Dream, A Buck, An Era sets a thriving immigrant culture against the harsh economic times of The Great Depression when American families faced tough challenges and found ways to win. The book begins with the discovery of an eighty year old scrapbook that details the career of one man who tried boxing as a means to change his life, and then takes us on a journey to people and places in some of the smallest and largest communities of the Pacific Northwest during the early-Depression years. The author has gathered within these covers a remarkable collection of vintage photographs and stories that paint a picture of a culture and an era.

This book is very interesting even for someone not especially interested in boxing. The author weaves individual stories into a theme that seems to flow naturally and maintain the reader's interest right to the end. His apparent good feelings for the era and for the people he profiles flow to the reader as well. I found that when I finished the book I wanted to know more. Some books you struggle to finish, A Dream, A Buck, An Era is one you want to keep reading right to the end.Product details

A Dream a Buck an Era Robert W Jepperson 9781456516512 Books Reviews
The author did such fine work of blending history, culture, geography, and boxing that I feel like I have actually visited the era. It's a interesting and easy read and I was sad when I finished the book because I wanted to read more about the characters and the interesting and historical era.
The author captured me in the bedroom of his Introduction and held my attention for the entire book. His imagination, fired by newspaper clippings, photos and interviews, then carefully layered with life-stories from a bygone era, created an interest-stirring book like nothing I've read before. I loved it!
